History and Development

Dr. Hartwell Howard founded Auburndale around the 1880’s after travelling to the area to recover from pneumonia. The city’s founders appealed for a train line through the area, seeing the benefit for the residents and as a beneficial expansion. Eventually the railroad did go through Auburndale, and now a beautiful trail lies where the railroad carved a path.  The city saw substantial growth with the arrival of the South Florida Railroad, which boosted its accessibility and appeal. Over the years, Auburndale has maintained its small-town charm while gradually developing into a vibrant community with modern amenities.
