What is Single-Ply Roofing?
Single-ply roofing is a form of roofing that has one layer of material. This differs from the three-layered system that consists of a cap sheet, underlayment and felt paper. Single ply roofs are usually made up of PVC, and they’re often used in residential and commercial roofs. They’re popular because they can be manufactured in wide rolls, which make them easier to install than three-layered systems.

Types of Single-Ply Roofing Systems
- TPO (Thermoplastic Polyolefin)
- PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride)
- EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer)
The most common type is TPO, short for thermoplastic polyolefin. It’s an expensive, highly flexible polymer material that can be shaped into a variety of roofing types and styles to meet your aesthetic needs.
EPDM Roofing is another type of single ply roof that stands for ethylene propylene diene monomer. A rubber-like material, EPDM can be easily installed on many different roofs and it’s resistant to ozone, ultraviolet light and oxidation.
PVC Roofing is yet another type of single ply roof that comes in both rigid or flexible forms. The rigid form can be installed on rooftops that are almost flat, but the flexible version must be used with slight to moderate slopes. PVC roofs are also resistant to ozone and UV damage, stains, corrosion, punctures and chemical spills.

3 Benefits of Using TPO EPDM & Single Ply Roofing in Florida
- Lower Prices – Single ply roofs are less expensive to install than traditional three-layered systems. They’re widely available, which is why they can be so affordably priced.
- Faster installation – TPO EPDM & Single Ply Roofing can install your single-ply roofing system much faster than a traditional three-layered roof. We can often get the job done in a third of the time, even if you have a large roofing surface to cover.
- Longer lasting – Because they’re made from more heat resistant materials, single ply roofs tend to last longer than traditional roofs. They’re also resistant to much more than just heat, including stains, corrosion, and punctures.

Single-Ply Roof Installation
There are several methods for installing single-ply roofing systems, including ballasted, mechanically fastened, fully adhered and hot asphalt. Each method has its own pros and cons.
CH Evans Roofing will work with you to determine the best installation method for your commercial or industrial building.

Ballasted Installation Method
The ballast is a layer of lightweight material that’s placed on top of the roofing membrane that holds it into place. Another lightweight material, such as gravel or stone chips, is used to fill in beneath the membrane. This type of installation is economical and can be used on buildings as large as sports arenas.

Mechanical Fasteners Installation Method
This type of installation is similar to ballasted installation, but it uses screws or bolts instead of stone or gravel. Mechanical fasteners are much more secure than the loose-fill method, and they’re often better for flat roofs. Installing the screws or bolts is complicated, however, which means it’s much more expensive.

Fully Adhered Installation Method
This type of installation involves a liquid adhesive applied directly to the roofing membrane that holds it into place as it dries. While this method of installation ensures that the EPDM won’t be blown off by strong winds, it’s limited to roofs that are mildly sloped.

Hot Asphalt Installation Method
This type of installation is known as “hot applied” because the EPDM liquid adhesive is heated before it’s rolled in place with a heavy roller. This method of installation is one of the most common, but it can be limited by weather conditions and its success depends on the skills of the installer.
